VirtualBox is a great free software for desktop virtualization. Here are couple of example use cases where I use Virtualbox:
– To test out new Linux distros (easier with a virtual machine than installing on my host machine or making a boot usb every time)
– Use a different OS than my host OS (Linux inside Windows and Windows inside Linux, usually to use some proprietary software)
– To test some software I don’t want to install directly to my host machine
