The Douglas County School District Student Advisory Group held a forum for candidates running for election. The event was held at Legacy Campus on October 10, 2023.
Questions asked of the candidates included the following:
-In light of recent struggles in the United States with gun violence in schools, what steps will you take to prevent such incidents from occurring in DCSD schools?
-DCSD continuously struggles with substance abuse of illegal substances including but not limited to vapes and marijuana products. What policies, initiatives, and other steps would you use to combat this problem ?
-How will you, as a Board director address the ongoing mental health crisis among students?
What is your position on the Mill Levy Override taking place this election? If you are in favor, how do you think the money earned should be allocated? If you are not in favor, how can DCSD attain necessary funding to address teacher pay and capital needs?
-How do you plan to work against the rising school bus problem, causing students to be left without buses for intermittent periods of time due to a lack of bus drivers?
-Do you believe the district operates in an environmentally sustainable fashion? If not, how would you address this problem?
-What are your thoughts on how DCSD currently evaluates and maintains teacher performance? What changes would you make, or would you leave it the same?
-Do you believe breakfasts and lunches provided by DCSD are of sufficient nutritional value to support the maximal growth and success of students? Do you believe healthier meals at school can help combat rising obesity rates? What plans do you have to provide healthier meals in DCSD schools?
-Do you believe the current Gifted and Talented program to be sufficient? If not, how will you address this problem to provide more value out of the program to GT students?
-How can LGBTQ+ students feel welcome at DCSD schools (this relates to school bathrooms, as almost all DCSD schools offer only two: male and female)?
-How do you plan to utilize technology including Artificial Intelligence tools to assist in classrooms and how will you prevent such tools from becoming detrimental to student learning and being used for academic dishonesty?
-The proper maintenance of school bathrooms has rapidly decreased in recent years as more bathrooms are being closed or are improperly sanitized and monitored. How can school bathrooms be maintained as sanitary and safe including preventing illicit and harmful activities in bathrooms?
